Update: Ouseburn Wastewater Improvements – Investing in a Cleaner Future

Big changes are on the way for the Ouseburn and Longbenton area, with a planned £6 million investment by Northumbrian Water to improve the local wastewater network. This is part of the water company’s ongoing commitment to protecting the environment and enhancing water quality across the region.

Project Overview

Northumbrian Water are planning to invest up to £6 million by 2030 to upgrade the local wastewater network, helping to reduce storm overflow spills into the Ouse Burn and improve drainage infrastructure and create a cleaner, healthier river for people and wildlife. This is one of many sites across the region set to benefit from these vital improvements.

The team are looking to start work next Autumn with an estimated completion date of Spring 2029. They will be working alongside their partner Esh Stantec to deliver the work.

What’s Happening Now

Survey work is currently underway to assess the performance of the existing sewerage network. These insights will guide the design and delivery of targeted improvements.

What to Expect

While final proposals are still being developed, early plans suggest a combination of innovative and traditional solutions, including:

  • Surface water separation from the combined sewer network
  • Sustainable drainage systems such as rain gardens, tree pits, and nature-based rainwater storage
  • Conventional upgrades like larger storage tanks and expanded pipework

These enhancements will help protect local waterways, reduce pollution, and support a healthier environment for everyone.

The investment in the Ouse Burn area has been welcomed by environmental partners, including the Reece Foundation, which champions initiatives to improve water quality and the local environment in the area, who are hoping the upgrading of storm overflows will have wider benefits, improving the environment throughout the Ouse Burn Valley and The Longbenton Letch.
